Point Of View

Tides From Nebula / One Leg Mary/ Circassian live @ MODU

Την Τετάρτη 19/10 επισκεφτήκαμε το MODU για να ακούσουμε το post rock/ metal των Πολωνών Tides From Nebula, αλλά και 2 ελληνικά συγκροτήματα (One Leg Mary και Circassian) με ιδιαίτερο και πολύ ενδιαφέρων ήχο.

Circassian

Ξεκίνησαν με το δυναμικό blues του Sir Flynt για να συνεχίσουν με το No Proof και High On Limbo.

One Leg Mary

Tides From Nebula

On Wednesday 19/10 we attended the live gig of Polish post rockers/metallers Tides From Nebula taking place in MODU. There were two Greek support bands (One Leg Mary and Circassian) with a distinct and interesting sound. MODU is a nice and cozy live venue, the announced timetable was kept and we saw a great show.

Circassian

Circassian were the ones that opened the gig at 21:20. A 4-member band with 2 guitarists that played also the keyboards. They started off their show with the dynamic blues of “Sir Flynt” and went on by playing “No Proof” and “High On Limbo”. Two things made an impression to me: Firstly, their sound was so good and clear that you could almost hear every note of every organ (Not using too much distortion help them on this, too). Secondly, that they play a mix of traditional Greek music soaked in psychedelic tunes and post/ math rock (they even played surf!) that comes out really good. They played a new song that has a catchy riff, wah pedals, ‘60s vocals, a melodic solo and many changes that ended up as post rock. They finished their set at 22:00 and earned a warm applause and our attention to them for the future time.

One Leg Mary

The 4-member band of One Leg Mary started their show at 22:10 setting the stage on fire with the power of “Speit Gazolin”. I believe that whoever didn’t know them, wrote down their name so he could look them afterwards. Post punk, math rock, you can label their music anything you want, the sure thing is this band rocks in a technical way. Their music consists of “irregular” stops, changes in timing and rhythm, power, “smart” compositions and nice vocals. A broken chord during their first song didn’t bring them down, they borrowed Circassian’s bass and the concert went on like nothing had happened.

There were melodic and mellow parts and others that were full in power, with the later being the most common. The “clean cut” parts existed until the next outburst came and you were left watching and listening what was happening in front of your eyes and ears. Gain, distortion and feedback, melted in an explosive post punk/ hardcore/ math rock mixture that made a lot of heads to shake. They finished their set after 40 minutes with the droning tune of “Sun”, which as the time passed was getting faster and harder, to escalate to a great epic ending. One Leg Mary is a hot prospect for the future and they added one more great live show in their list.

Tides From Nebula

The post rockers/ metallers from Poland got on MODU’s stage at 23:10 and for one and a half hour we were co-travellers in their dreamy journey. Tides From Nebula appearance made an impression to me for being so professional, organized and you could understand that everything had been carefully prepared regarding music and organization. Led lights, smoke, lightning, music, everything contributed to the atmosphere the band intended (and managed) to create.

It was obvious that the trio of Tides, dressed in black, enjoyed being there and playing. You could see them headbanging to their music and you knew they like what they are doing. They didn’t say a lot of words, except for some “thank you” to the audience, as their music speaks for them. The second thing that made an impression to me was that their songs were heavier and more powerful live than in albums. Of course a live show is everything for a post rock band, as they can create easier the atmosphere they want, but Tides from Nebula succeeded in creating both an atmosphere and a heavier sound, that added power to their songs. Beautiful melodies mixed with heavy outbursts, great atmosphere and music. Guitarist Maciej Karbowski  and bassist Przemek Węgłowski played also keyboards, were occupied with buttons and pedals but found time to dominate the stage. Drummer Tomasz Stolowski’s playing was technical, powerful and passionate and gave rhythm to our journey.

They told us that it’s their third time in Greece and every time they feel special. They asked the audience if there was someone in their first gig in Athens supporting The Ocean in 2013, they thanked us for dedicating our Wednesday to them and also the previous band “that were really good”. Tides From Nebula gave us an excellent show, created images only with notes and music and we are more than glad that we dedicated our Wednesday to them!
